Communications

The largest town in Tuolumne County is its county seat, Sonora, with a population just under 5,000. On State Highway 108, the next largest town is Twain Harte–population under 2,500. Above Twain Harte is a series of villages whose populations swell significantly during summer and holiday weekends. When this happens, the cell phone bandwidth is compromised, often making communication and internet access slow to non-existent. For this reason, several communications systems have been placed into service to assist residents and visitors in case of an emergency.
